Every city deserves a police chief they can trust to act lawfully, who will compel their officers to act lawfully, to treat everyone as equal before the law, to be able to handle the criticism that comes with being a government employee and be able to build trust within the community they serve with all citizens. The hiring of a new Des Moines chief of police should include the opportunity for the community to ask questions of the potential candidate(s) that will be considered for hiring and if any issues of concern from the community are raised, the city should receive these concerns and take them into consideration.
