Be sure to check out the recording!

Hello ,

Thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday for our monthly water testing meeting. Great to have you in the Zoom room!

It was a small but mighty group with incredible engagement and sharing of information - THANK YOU!

If you didn't make the Zoom, here's what you missed and a link to the recording:

  • Shout Outs!

    • Members who attended the presentation of the Polk County CISWRA report - Upwards of 1000 people attended or watched online!
    • Colette and Bill in Iowa City– quoted in Iowa Starting Line newsletter about water testing with CCI
    • Kim in Polk City – posting on social media about water quality, new reverse osmosis system in home
    • Tom in Council Bluffs – shared his experience with the Deltares app, Tom scienced the science!
    • Jo Ann in Correctionville - featured as an Izaak Walton League Meet A Monitor
    • Central Iowa residents for surviving the water rationing Central Iowa Water Works needed to impose to provide safe drinking water.

  • Water quality in the news

    • Polk County CISWRA report - found that nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers are among the highest in the nation, primarily from agriculture.
    • EPA rescinds decision to expand Iowa's impaired waters list - this action means that major rivers in Iowa are not treated as exceeding the nitrate standard for purposes of the Clean Water Act. (CCI quoted!)
    • Iowa cities receive millions in PFAS settlement - how and where will this money be spent in Iowa?
    • Linn County to develop comprehensive water quality plan - communities are working towards local protections
    • Iowa groups tell congressional delegation bill would ‘gut’ Clean Water Act - now is not the time to make our waters more vulnerable (CCI quoted!)

  • CCI water testing data and practices

    • Linda in Cedar Falls - talked about advocating directly with decision makers and recommended the Harkin Institute podcast Canary in a Cornfield
    • Barb in Boone - talked about high nitrate numbers she has recorded in local streams all summer, some as high as 30 mg/L! They are finally coming down. She also told us about the RainDrop App for finding exact measurements of rainfall.
    • Gordon in Estherville - made a handy device that serves a dual purpose - a walking stick and a pole to dip test strips in the water!

A special thank you to Mary Ellen who joined the call and shared a wealth of information about her lifetime of work serving the state of Iowa in numerous capacities!

And finally - CCI water testers and Citizen Scientists have a chance to share our data and stories with the Iowa DNR! They have announced 2 virtual public meetings for the purpose of reviewing water quality standards.

  • Mark your calendar for Sept 18 at 9:30am and Sept 23 at 2:30pm. Zoom links to join found here.
  • After the first session Sept 18 thru Oct. 20 - public comments can be submitted to wqs@dnr.iowa.gov.

As you can see, we covered a lot of ground! I encourage you to watch the recording. It's only an hour and well worth the time.

Let me know what you thought about our meeting or share any feedback from your water testing. I love to hear from you!
